A rep from Southcorp once told me that the Aussie's had a very mixed workforce many years ago.
All these folks spoke different languages and the cellar master needed a way to communicate which wine he wanted pulled.
When the wines were marketed the name just stuck. I think it has been kept because it is distinct to the Aussie's. To my knowledge ther is no other meaning to any bin number.
