A short but decisive step up from Chianti is Rosso Di Montalcino. You should be able to find a good one between $18 - $20. A more radical move in another direction would be a Nebbiolo D'Alba. Again, you should be able to find one in your price range. On a recent trip to our Boise, Portland, last Friday, the only one we could find cost $31.00! They can be had for around $10.00 elsewhere.
