As weird as it sounds, find a Merlot driven Petit Chateau from Bordeaux (1ere Cotes or Bordeaux Sup. will do fine), not too oaky. We English have been sloshing it over our strawberries for years. The effect is rather like drinking a glass of Laurent Perrier Rosé with Strawberries (this is how I proposed to my wife - smooth huh?)
If you stop to think for a moment, strawberries aren't actually that sweet (probably more so over there (US) than here (UK), though). The bright, herbaceous fruit of the claret is lifted out of the wine by the subtle flavour and phenomenal acidity of the strawberries. At the same time, the light tannins in the wine give the strawberries the illusion of being sweeter than they are. Doesn't work for everyone, but you'll have fun discussing the outcome at least!
