Bulgaria's Suhindol region (North-central part of the country) is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Some quality wines --designated as "Kontrollian" (the Bulgarian equivalent of AOC wines in the European Union) -- come out of there, and investors are rediscovering this tradional wine-making district.

That said, in 1983, Bulgaria was still deep behind the iron curtain, and its wine sector was not yet competing in the international marketplace (it would start soon thereafter, however, and it never was a complete basket case in terms of wine production). And as far as I remember, Trakia has always been a fairly low-end product that was O.K. for the (very low) price, but certainly not one for cellaring.

That's a long-winded way to agree with the Curmudgeon's advice!
