Being that you are going to serve the wine with cheese and such, I would go with a wine that is higher in acid like a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.

The acid in the wine basically strips your pallate so that every bite of food tastes like the first bite.

If you are set on Chardonnay, I would look for one that has little or no oak. Try some of the Italian Chardonnays. They too are higher in acid.

If you are looking for red wines I would lean toward the Pinot Noirs, Valpolicellas or lighter Chiantis. Heavy reds like Cabs or Merlots will not enhance the flavors of the cheese and such.

Just my humble opinion.
