The only truly documented problems with sulfur dioxide (sulfites in wine) for humans is that it can, in the right dosage, shut down an asthmatic's respiratory system.

Wine usually contains low levels of sulfites, but you should check with the medicos to see and understand what your ashtmatic condition can or cannot withstand.

Incidentally, a host of packaged baked foods contain sulfites too.
