Hi there,

I have a Gift Box that I purchased in 1984 as a teenage for my parents of 3 Mirassou wines. To begin, the box is in perfect condition and has been kept very carefully over the years. Inside the box is:

1980 Santa Clara County Petit Rose
1980 Monterey County Chenin Blanc
1978 Monterey County Cabernet Sauvignon Unfiltered

I would like to know how to place a value on this set of wines, either individually or as a set. Anyone's help is appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to the board. Unfortunately, all of the wines are dead and gone. The only value is sentimental.

I was told that the cabernet (which is unfiltered) has a high chance of being fine. I was also told that the vinyard does not know of any other bottles of that particular wine in existance.

When you say it has been kept very carefully over the years, does this mean the temperature has been below 70 degrees F, and the humidity has been high? If so it might still be drinkable.

my home was built in the late 1800's, in my basement is a wine cellar/bomb shelter. I have about 25 bottles of wine and this one gift box. (I don't drink at all...but keep wine for my friends and as gifts). So yes it has been kept at below 70 and in a high humidity environment.

OK, I'll amend with the storage -- the only one that has a chance is the Cab. If, however, you were going to open it on a special occasion, I'd recommend you have a back-up bottle.

As far as the novelty, there may be some value, perhaps the winery wishing to bring them back to put them in a wine library, but I don't think there would be great value other than in the novelty. Not much of a market for 26-year old rose.

Again welcome to the board -- I, too, have a 100-yr old house, but no basement -- I'd love to have a wine cellar/bomb shelter! Kinda neat!

Even if it was in good shape, Mirassou is not a collectable. To be direct, the wines are pretty mediocre, scoring in the 70s and low 80s.
