Headed to McCain Country

Just leaving a little note to say I'm headed off for three weeks to visit family and friends in Nevada and Arizona. Friday I'm invited to a wine tasting with Jim Wallace in Prescott AZ. I'll say hi to John McCain & Sarah Palin when I see them (
about 0% chance of that happening)... Then I'm headed to Sedona for a couple of weeks.

Anyway, you all be good. I'm taking a new little netbook (Acer One) with me. It's a sweet mini PC -- WiFi ready. So, if I can find some Wi-Fi along the way I'll post a message.

Hope everyone is recovering from the election. I, for one, am just glad it's finally over!

The Bush Administration was a sorry EIGHT YEARS in my overview. He did handle the initial response to 9/11 well as when he visited the Twin Towers site in hard hat, but then he and his cronies misled the Congress and the American populace into an unnecessary war in Iraq and it was downhill from there. Katrina, wire tapping without warrants, no energy policy, etc. Maybe a new broom will sweep out the cobwebs and restore our image abroad. Foreign reaction to the election is already positive.

And WOW has the masrket shown enthusiam for this result. This will be my last post that even smacks od politics as this is not the forum but it is my sincere wish that this young man not only bring us old codgers into the fold with some real visionary ideas but dissapoint the radicals in his party who think he can walk on water and give them all the freebies, social security, health care, etc., and actually right some of the wrongs my party has put into place over the last 4 y health care benefits, social security,ears(not 8) and reach across party lines and get this great nation back on track. Yeah, don't get me wrong. I have little use for congress as a whole. Carole and I took a major hit. Our 401 K has decreased by 40%. That means another four or five years before retirement. There is enough blame to put all of congress to shame. Now is not the time to point fingers -- it is time to get the nation back on track. I have hope, but not blind faith.

This will be my only post on the matter, as you all probably aren't real interested in my thoughts on the matter (also, not the foum as said above).
I'm a weird hybrid-- I tend to be VERY socially "liberal" to the point that liberals tihnk I'm nuts, and VERY fiscally conservative (to the point that conservatives think I'm nuts). I also view foreign policy from the perspective of a world rather than American citizen (of course, defense is important). Basically liberatarian, though that party doesn't often put up a presidential candidate I like much. Politicians as a whole usually just gross me out. Based on the above leanings, you can guess my feelings toward the last 8 years.

Anyway, knowing he will do many things I disagree with, I'm tipping a glass tonight in the hope (hope being an emotional desire rather than a political slogan) that Obama works out to the considerable potential he has to do good for us and the world, and I'll be doing so until Jan 20. On Jan. 21, I'll start complaining [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb/smile.gif[/img]
(Incidentally, I've been a bit of a fan of John McCain's for some time as well... I liked both candidates far better than I usually do.)

One last note: I work with a number of city kids in my school district. It was good to see their pride on Wednesday. It's been a long, rough history they've been through and are going though.

Thanks everyone for keeping the tone civil. My investments are down in value anywhere from 20-30% and I too am thinking of possibly postponing retirement (planned for 2010 or 2011 but will see how assets recover by then and may work longer.) However that began in September and analysts say the reaction of the past two days was to job loss and perilous condition of American auto industry, etc., not the election results.
I too liked McCain--I find him and Chuck Hagel and Dick Lugar among the most "acceptable" Republicans. Senators Hagel and Lugar are both being mentioned for possible Cabinet positions to reach across the aisle for a bipartisan Cabinet. (I met Lugar's daughter in Germany when her husband was serving in the military there possibly in the early 80's). It looks like a tough agenda for the new President-Elect and I hope both sides of the aisle will work for some energy policy, health care policy, etc. that can see us through the coming years. It's time to look beyond four years and plan for the next generation, etc.

Hi all! I am sitting at the breakfast tabloe with Jim & Miramae. Had a great time at the wine tasting last night -Jazz Band and all.

JW has a bumper sticker that I loved> It says "Charles Shaw for President"...

Now that would have been a good solution for the election! Talk about fiscal responsibility.

Innkeeper, Jim says thank you & it is really good to hear from you. He says he's been out of touch but is coming back to life and will be posting on the board. (I keep encouraging him but he keeps losing his password - duh.)

His ranch near Prescott is great. They have horses and all sorts of critters. Very serene and peaceful. Also LOTS of great wine.
