how long can i keep an opened bottle of wine in the chiller?

any difference between red or white wine?

Hi Princeton, and welcome to the Wine Board. It all depends on the specific type and brand of wine. They vary greatly for a day or less to a week. It matters not whether they are red or white. There is an annual guidebook that gives "survival" data on hundreds of popular wines. It is called, "Andrea Immer's Wine Buying Guide for Everyone." The '07 version should be out soon, and the '06 is still a valuable guide.

If kept past their individual "shelf lives" they lose usefulness quickly.

One way to keep wine a little better: Get and keep a half bottle (375 ml) preferably a screw top. When you open a new full size bottle, fill up the half bottle to the top and rescrew or recork. This will eliminate excess oxygen almost completely, and better than most mechanical systems. You can keep almost any wine up to week in the fridge this way.
