Hi. I'm a newbie to wines, and would like to start learning more about them, starting locally. I live on Long Island, in New York, in the USA. I was wondering if anyone had heard of or tasted some of the wines local to the New York area, and could recommend a good place to start?

Thank you in advance.

Oh, I'm also going to pick up the publications suggested by most of you as good places to start such as the Dummies book, and others.

Hi LI Newbie, and welcome to the Wine Board. Right now the best book to get started wine is "Great Wine Made Simple" by Andrea Immer (Robinson) who resides where you live the last time I looked.

I grew up on L.I. myself and therefore go back from time to time to visit family and friends. We usually take the New London to Orient Point ferry, and then head west. This gives us an opportunity to visit the wineries along the way.

My impression of L.I. wineries is that they are nice and nice to visit, but their product is expensive for what you get.

I much prefer the wines from the Finger Lakes region. You should be able to find them in wine stores where you live. They do a particularly good job with Riesling, by also do well with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, sparkling wine, and various red and white blends.
