For a gift for a friend of mine who's into wine, I'm thinking of getting a decanter. I doin't think he has one. Are there different kinds of decanters for different kinds of wine--red, white, etc.? Is there a certain type I should look for or avoid?

There are many different types of decanters. I think you'll get the idea if you check out decanters.com. Since this would be a gift, Riedel would be the most recognized and probably the most appreciated. If you decide on one for yourself, I would get one that you're most comfortable with. I have 6 or 7 decanters but use a liquor decanter 99% of the time especially when double decanting. Try a Spiegelau Easy Pour, it cost less and it's just comfortable to use.

You'll also find a goodly selection of decanters, as well as other wine related stuff, at www. wineenthusiast.com.

Or get a bottle of Almaden with a wide mouth top. Cook with or discard the contents, and use the bottle for a decanter. It works fine.
