Worlds best wines - how / where / what to collect

I am interested in collecting wines.

Having read articles about bottles being sold for amazing prices I am interested to know how one gets in the know.

Are there books / sites / info that provide a detailed list about the top 500 wines of all time.

Also, are there any books / sites / info that provide details of what were the best vintages for specific countries.

Hi Mr Padoo, and welcome to the Wine Board. It sounds like you wish to collect wines as an investment. This is not encouraged. As bad as things are, the stock market is much more reliable.

If you want to collect wine in order to drink, that is another story. First you have to find out what you like. Go to tastings at retailers. Visit nearby wineries. Hopefully an opportunity will arise to taste a great wine that has been aged out. Many if not most people these days don't like aged out wines, but prefer them when the fruit is fresh.

Hi there Mrpadoo and welcome to the board. The whole problem with your problem is it's in the past. Iks' advice is correct. Wine is for drinking, stocks are for investing. When Lafite sold for 40 per bottle in the early 80s' you could receive a return in 10-20 years. Now Lafite has taken the investment value into account and is selling for 300. Winemakers, like automobile builders like to maximize profit. WW
