hi all, i am new here, and have loved wine for years, but really know nothing about it. i stumble on to a good bottle now and again.

and i must confess, after years of blind wine shopping, i dont think i like cabernet s. i mean i like it, but instead of fruit and berries, what i like most in a wine is earthiness. a few years ago i had a bordeaux that was fantastic, tasting of leather and a wine cellar. but i lost the bottle and have know idea what kind it was.

last night i had a fairly decent rhone..
2000 j vidal fleury
cotes-de-ventoux
not as earthy as the aformentioned bordeaux, but i liked it.

so i humbly ask you very experienced folks for any suggestions.
thanks

Good Morning Friar,

Welcome to the wineboard!

You have made a very important discovery. There are two different styles of wine

Old World = the earthiness of Bordeaux

New World = the fruit bombs of California

The nice thing is that a nice little Bordeaux will cost you far less than a Meritage of California made with the same grapes.

If you go back to the first page of this board and scroll down you will see an entire section of this board dedicated to Bordeaux.
If you click on the down arrow it will go from posts from the past 20 days to all posts. There are many wines reviewed and recommended.

Old world wines include Italy. I'm guessing you will like Chianti, Rosso di Montalcino, Montepulciano and Barbera as well.

We also have a thread for Rhone and South of France. Lots of good stuff there too.
