New to merlot

Hello everyone. I am still new to wines so please bear with me here. I just bought a bottle of 1999 Woodbridge Merlot by Robert Mondavi and I was wondering if it was a good choice. Any other merlot recommendations that is moderate in price?

I also like white zinfandel too. Are there any good recomendations on that?

A good portion of White Zin on the market is a cash cow, real plonk. There are wineries who treat it seriously, like a Rose, an example:

2001 Pedroncelli, Zinfandel Rosé, Sonoma County, California, $8, 2,330 cases. The color reminds you of a red candied apple fair treat. There are strawberries with a touch of citrus zest on the nose. A more serious style of White Zin, being dry, crisp, and fruity, this will make a nice summer quaff. 84/85.

Good choice, Bucko. About the only other white zine I've seen that might be a decent drink is from Beringer.

Welcome to the Wine Board Obscurus. The Woodbridge Merlot would not be my first choice of the Woodbridge selections. They do a much better job on their (red) zinfandel. A better merlot, at around the same price comes from Bogle. If you live around any wine stores with a significant selection of Italian Wines, look for those from the Collio Region. This is not a carte blanche endosement of Italian Merlot, any more than Bogle is an endorsement of all California Merlot.

In addition to the very nice white zins mentioned above, look for Buehler, Napa Valley, White Zinfandel at around $8.00. Wonderful.

Now that you mention it, I use the Woodbridge stuff for marinades and for other cooking duties.
