Does price follow quality?

I've been wining (not whining) for about a year. Mine is an unpolished palate, but I can pick out some qualities of my favorite varietals. I just can't name them. But the biggest frustration has to do with the purchasing more than the tasting. I'm sure you'll ridicule me for this, but I usually decide between brands based on the price. Not too cheap, not too expensive. For all I know, I could be paying twice as much for battery acid.

Case in point -- I'm looking at an empty bottle of Yellow Tail Cabernet Sauvignon. How we finished this bottle I do not know. Didn't particularly enjoy it. Would you call that a value at just under $10, or could I do better with my inky reds?

Other favorites of mine (modestly-priced recommendations welcome): Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir

Hi Epic and welcome to the board. This is one of the most frequently asked questions on this thread. The general consesus is that there is, to a point, a definate relation of P/Q, or NOT. If you review the different threads and go back 100 days you'll find reviews of every imaginable varietal. The Best Buy/Real Deal thread will point you to some outstanding P/Q wines. Lots of good advice on the other threads (Cabernet, Pinot, Syray/Shiraz, etc.)about wines in all price points. If this answer seems oblique, believe me the question is one hard sucker to nail down. Keep on tasting till you hit the holy-grail. It be one fun trip. WW
