Feeling a need to make the move from wine coolers to something more sophicated, I have just recently discovered wine. I have very limited knowledge regarding wines. I always seem to stick with a blush (White Zin.) due to fear of not liking anything else. Recently I was introduced to a wine, Quintessa of Rutherford. This was wonderful, but very costly. What would you suggest when out and ordering by the glass?

Hi Tschneid, and welcome to the Wine Board. It is hard to give by the glass advice as availablity and freshness of offerings varies from region to region and restaurant to restaurant. Ask the waiter what moves the fastest. This will let you know what is fresh and what is popular. Keep track of the wines you taste this way and soon of pattern of your likes and dislikes will develop.

Hi, T! I was in your situation a few years ago, so I started with the white zin, then moved to chardonnay. I really like the Kendall Jackson chardonnay (I'm a pretty cheap/economical person). But, tasting the difference between the white zin & chardonnay helped me develop my taste buds, and, since, I've had the opportunity to explore more wines with a better sense of what I'm tasting. Moving into the reds is fun, but not as "easy" - from my own experience.

If you like a touch of sweetness, try some of the Northwestern Sauvignon Blancs. They are luscious and fruity, and a real bargain.

To develop your taste buds, compare them to some New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.
