When we were in Barcelona a couple of years ago, I got into their Riojas. Any thoughts?

Love them and welcome to the board!. Take a look at the Spanish area of this board and you will find a lot of tasting notes and opinions.

Personally, having had the opportunity to travel through a lot of Spain, I love the food and wine! The people are great and they have an energy and vibrancy that is addictive to the traveller.

Love Riojas and Love Spanish food, probably because my great-grandparent came from Spain. Spanish wines have this particular nose of leather that make them really different from anything coming from France or Italy. That is what I like of Old World wines...

The food...MMM! One Word... Fabada!!!!

We like Spanish food and wine too, but don't restrict the wine to just Spanish food. As a matter of fact, we will resort to a Spanish wine when it is not obvious what to have or "ought" to have with a given food. Kielbasa is a good example of when we will almost always go for a peasant wine from Spain. We prefer Garnacha or Monastrell or blends of these with others, to Tempranillo, but have never been known to turn a good Rioja down. At Christmastime, we usually get an inexpensive Rioja to make our Sangria.
