In early October I'll be in Boston for a few days, so I'd love to get any recommendations on wine shops and wine bars there. I'll be staying (I think) in or near the Back Bay area, and I won't have a car, so my reach will be pretty limited to bipedal and subway transport....

Boston's fairly lean in the wine bar category. About the only one worth going to is Les Zygomates, and actually it's a great place. I checked and their website is still up at www.winebar.com.

Boston has a lot of very good wine shops, and the public transportation (above and below ground) is also good and can easily get you anywhere around the city fairly quickly. It's a fairly small city, so getting around isn't too hard. Shops to look for are Bauer on Newberry (Back Bay), Brookline Liquor Mart (the best, IMHO), Martignetti (in Brighton), V. Cirace (North End) and La Bodega (also North End). There are quite a few more, but these should keep you busy.

Thanks, KC, this is very helpful. It looks like there's more than enough to last me for four days!

Brookline Liquor Mart was just voted the "Best Wine Store" in Boston in the annual reader poll of Boston Magazine.
