Visit to New York City (and Is-Wine?)

I will be in NYC March 8-11. I hope to visit Is-Wine on Monday, March 10th. I know that's over a month away but wondered if Foodie is likely to be at work that day? Also if I e-mail him care of the shop, could he give me directions on how to get to Is-Wine by subway (or an estimate of cost by taxi). I will be staying on West 36th St. in Manhattan.

He should be back to work by then. He is now on a month or so sabatical in his home in Hammondsport. Is-Wine is only a couple of blocks from the Bleeker Street station of the Lexington Av Line. Take the shuttle across town to Grand Central Station, and then the local downtown.

It's the crosstown shuttle (subway) that runs across 42d Street. You can then transfer to the Lex Line.

Foodie is back to work today--oh well, had to happen...teaching the first wine class of 2003 tomorrow night.

Wondersofwine, can't give you my March schedule (can't give you next week's schedule) but give a call when you arrive--we will make arrangements somehow.

If you are on the West side, you will need directions to get to the train IK speaks of. Me, I avoid subways (got caught down there on a hot August many years ago and swore the sucker off)--TAXI's my game.

I'm going to fully play the New Yorker and give you a third set of directions, then proclaim it to be the best:

Take the F train from 34th & 6th Ave to the 2nd Ave./Lower East Side stop. From 2nd Ave. just walk north to 5th St. and turn left.

I'm headed there myself this very evening . . .

Shortwiner arrived last night, and he happens to have given you the best way to get to is-wine from where you will be on the west side.
When you get off at that 2nd Avenue stop you are on Houston Street and 2nd Ave. From there--north--the streets are numbered. (Incidentally, uptown is north; you'd be surprised how many people in NY do not understand that concept.)

That is the best way. Just be sure to get on the "F" train. Other subways on the same track go to different places.

Thanks for all the help. I have been looking at maps of Manhattan and Greenwich Village and did figure out that Uptown (as in Uptown Girl) is north.

We were last in NYC this past August to see some shows and visit with friends from the Bronx.

We did not get a chance to visit Is-Wine even though we were staying mid-town kinda on the west side (right next door to Grand Central Station) at the Roosevelt Hotel (try it, it is a neat place to stay).

We did however utilize the services of Is-Wine. We had a half-case of sparkling Italian wine delivered to the hotel for our pleasure.

Foodie was not in town at that time, but we still would have liked to visit the store. However that may be, their response to our request for the wine and its delivery was handled smartly. We got the wine quickly and we enjoyed our brief contact, by phone, with the store's staff. Oh and the wine was good too!

We also used some advice from Foodie concerning a restaurant for dinner. The place was charming and the food was tremendous! We had drinks at the bar before we were seated at our table, wine by the glass with the meal and after-dinner drinks with dessert and walked out of the place slightly less than $100.00 poorer (and this included the tip). We would go back there again, thats for sure. Name: Pierre Au Tunnel, on 47th Street in the theatre district a couple of blocks east of B'Way.

Can't wait to visit NYC again and actually get downtown to the store to visit and shop.

Oh, by the way, F train would have been my choice also.

Regarding operating hours of Pierre Au Tunnel French Restaurant:

Sorry, they are not open on Sunday - as a lot of places are not. Seems NYC restaurants close on Sunday or Monday as a matter of course. (Pun unintended.)

Here are their hours of operation:

Lunch: Mon-Sat 12pm-3pm. Dinner: Mon-Tue, Thu-Fri 5:30pm-11:30pm
Wed, Sat 4:30pm-11:30pm.
