wine for chocolate

A few years ago a friend gave me a split of wine and exclaimed it to be the worlds best wine with chocolate. IT WAS! I cannot remember what it was but it was not a port. It was a heavy rich ruby color but not as syurpy and thick as port usually is, not quite as sweet as well. Does anyone have an idea what it may have been?

It was probably Banyuls. A desert wine made in the south of France primarily from Grenache. I would also suggest that you try a dry Grenache as long as the chocolate is not too sweet. A CdP like Vieux Telegraphe is near perfect with bittersweet chocolate.
