Decanter

I just purchcased a nice decanter and was wondering how everyone cleans theirs. Do you use soap and h2o or just h20? I can't get a cleaning utensil down into the neck. And I don't want the wine to get any soapy taste as well. MS

Hate to be a spoil sport, but if you can't get a cleaning utensil down the neck, you don't have a very good decanter. It will only do half the job, that of having a place to move your wine in hopes of eliminating sediment. The other half of the job, and far most common use, is aeration. For aeration you need a wide mouth.

I put my decanter into the dishwasher. If it builds up deposits, use false teeth cleaner.

It has a neck about 1 inch in diameter and then flairs out to about 7 inches at the bottom. It is pretty small, as it only holds a half bottle, which is perfect for me and my other diner. MS

If you go into a good wine shop that carries accessories, you should be in luck. Many shops carry a decanter cleaning tool. It's about a foot long and it's a bendable metal rod with soft chenille cloth over it. We've had one for a few years and it works great. Also, use a good soap like Seventh Generation. It's all natural with no petroleum or perfumes. Most dish soaps are petroleum based and can leave a film on your glasses and decanters. I get mine at Whole Foods Market.
