Hello! I am new to wine... and have a father-in-law originally from Hungary. He raves about the wines he enjoyed there before he came to the United States. Can anyone fill me in on wines from Hungary- and possibly recommend any? I went to a few stores here in the Chicago suburbs- but selection is one or two or none. I think it would be a treat to get him a few bottles to enjoy! Thanks for your help!

You're in one of the largest markets in the U.S. Suggest you contact one of the big retailers there and ask them to show you some Hungarian wines. As a minimum, they should have Tokaj, but there are many others produced and a large market would be the place to find them in this country.

Many, many years ago I had a bottle or three of Hungarian wine. As I recall it was very fruity and on the sweet side. Delicious and unusual.

Good luck. Let us know what you find there in Chicago.

Not sure where you're located in the Chicagoland area, but you should have a Binny's around you. I'd look there first.

Hi everyone!
Thanks for all the responses so far! This board is a great resource! I did go to a Binny's today- they offered one red and a few Tokaj- but that was it. The gentleman at the store told me he had no idea where I could go in the area to get a better assortment. He mentioned something about there being no demand for Hungarian wines as the wines from that area have no "world class" offerings that would make them sought after by consumers. As I said earlier- I am new to all of this- but I didn't know you needed to be world class to get into a store.....
thanks again to everyone for thier help!

Strange - We have virtually no one asking for Hungarian wines, but we carry about 6 sweet, semi-sweet reds and 5 Tokay.

Actually, the shop is in Framingham - outside of Boston - and we don't ship - sorry.
