I just realised I have a buddy flying to Jersey next week, somewhere "close" to NYC. I wonder if I can get him to bring me a bottle of something typical of the region, and if so what I could ask him to look for at the store. 10-30 $ range. any thoughts? WP

He may see more wines from Long Island on store shelves than Finger Lakes wines. He could ask about a Riesling from Konstantin Frank Winery or Hermann Weimer or a Gewurztraminer from a Long Island winery or possibly a Cabernet Franc or Lemburger. I like the Glenora Blanc de Noir sparkling wine.

I would recommend all that WOW has mentioned particularly Finger Lakes Riesling, Cab Franc, and Lemburger. Also Cab Franc led Meritages, and oak free Chardonnay. From Long Island he should look for Merlot in addition to the Cab Franc.

IK's right. Vintage NY has the best selection. There are two locations--the one IK listed downtown and another one uptown on the west side.

Well my buddy got back yesterday. He replaced the local 05 Oliver merlot I sent north, with an 05 Dr. Konstantin Frank semi dry reisling. He was unable to shop in NY, he understandibly spent his one day in the city sight seeing. In Jersey he had a tough time finding any finger lake wine, not large enough volumes produced or wrong time of year I guess. He was shocked that of only two bottles found at six or seven stores one was actually one of three on my look for list, (I was hopeing for a Glenora to try). I'm guessing this riesling should be drank soon. The label suggests a ham pairing. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks WP

Not familiar with the 05 vintage but it is probably ready for drinking now or could be held a year or two. Might as well have it in its youth. I liked the semi-dry riesling as I recall and ham would be a good choice. It could also go with roast pork or pork chops or some chicken or cornish hen dishes or fish. Pretty versatile.

OOps, remember reading about letting wine rest after traveling, Is 5 days long enough or does it matter with whites? WP
