Wife and I spent the weekend skiing up at Whistler and had dinner at Hy's Steakhouse. Ordered a 2000 Woodward Canyon Artist Series Cabernet. Bottle was not corked or "bad" just incredibly closed. Even after asking for a decanter, and extremely vigorous swirling it would not open up. I told the waiter not wanting or expecting him to do anything, really just wanting to talk about it. well, he sniffed, looked puzzled (said it was drinking beutifully 2 weeks ago), went away for a moment, came back and offered another bottle of the same or something new simply because he didn't want us to be dissapointed.

I chose a Cali Cab instead and it was much better.

He came back later on and said they sampled it in the back and agreed something was not right.

It's quite refreshing to be treated like this when you hear so many stories of the opposite happening.

Hy's has an excellent reputation, and with the "Whistler Tax" on all of the restaurants up there (at least 25% higher than costs down here in the city), they better have good service, although that seems like above and beyond. That's great.

I would agree, Hy's reputation is great but some of their satellite operations are not in the best of shape (reminds me of an old 1960's great steak place...without any renovations)...especially true of their Alberta restaurants. Otherwise.. GREAT steaks.
