I've always believed that "the wine you like is the wine you should drink." I'm going to a very nice (read, expensive) steak house in a few days. I'm a German rielsing lover. How "bad" would it be to drink this lovely wine wine with a New York Steak? Is there a "red" that isn't to tannic or harsh on the palett? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the board, Bo. A steak cries out for a red, especially a Cabernet Sauvignon. If you think that would be too tannic, look for a Merlot, or a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, such as a St Emilion from France.

If a steak is prepared in a true German manner, a German Riesling can work OK.... but I personally wouldn't risk it on this side of the pond.

A long time ago (try 40 years) I saw Germans enjoying steak with sweet and very full Riesling, and admittedly did it too. I understand you would never see that there today, and can't recommend you try it in Oregon. A nice lower price Washington Merlot would be a good choice, e.g. Columbia Crest Grande Estate.

Why don't you try both and see what you like? Let us know what you think.

Sorry, just saw the date. Did you already go? What did you drink? Notes on the wine?

Hi - I did indeed have a great bottle of red wine, Spanish, a roja "Alenande" (sp?) 2000. It went very well with the meal. For a special treat, I tried a Canadian "ice wine" (eiswein) from the Niagra area-fantastic; sweet, memorable but with a very clean finish. From now on, I'll stick with red and hearty meats, though I still enjoy the riesling with pork, fowl, etc. Thanks for suggestions.

Bo,

Glad you tried something new AND enjoyed it. Do you happen to know what grape the Rioja was. I could see a blend such as predominately tempranillo, some cab, and some monestrel working out perfectly.

If you can, get the '01, this may be even better.

I've never had a canadien wine although have certainly heard of them. That's an area where I've yet to explore. Gotta get on that.

Drink up and enjoy, Brap
