Fumbling on the 1-yard line

We spent the Memorial Day weekend at the ranch. I dragged the BBQ pit down there to smoke a brisket and grill some salmon steaks; she had all the sides prepared, including her incredible BBQ sauce for the beef and a dilled sauce for the salmon. I set the pit up downwind from the house, scrounged deadfall oak and made an excellent fire that burned down to a fine bed of coals in no time. Put the brisket in the smoking chamber fat-side up; scrounged more wood, and after an hour, removed the brisket, turned it over, seasoned it again, wrapped it in foil; temperature holding nicely at 275. Went in the house for a beer, and she asked, "Would you go ahead and open the wine? I need to add a cup to the dilled sauce." It was a 1998 Deerfield Ranch Sauvignon Blanc, one of those rare CA SB's that we really enjoy. Opened the fridge, and no wine. Looked in the three ice chests we had brought things down in, and no wine. Dashed to the truck and excavated the detritus behind the seat, and no wine. Back to the fridge, checked the freezer compartment, no wine. She's incredulous: "What could you possibly have done with it?" Sheepish shuffle, head hung down, "I dunno...", shuffle, shuffle.

Grilled the salmon steaks with olive oil, and they came out perfectly. Had them for dinner, leaving the brisket in the pit for a full nine hours to serve for lunch the next day. All was perfect, except for the wineless dilled sauce and WINELESS DINNER! ARGH!

When we got home, the wines were in the little beer fridge, to which I had moved them for chilling before we hit the road.

She's still ragging on me: "You've forgotten a lot of things on our trips - your razor, toothbrush, change of clothes, and virtually everything else - but you've NEVER forgotten the WINES before!"

That would NEVER happen to me.... I've forgotten my cork puller before. I'd forget my wife, before I'd forget the wine....
