Very nice that the SF Chron named Merry Edwards the winemaker of the year. About time.

Okay, I'll bite. For us undereducated sorts or just myself, what winery(s) are associated with the winemaker?

CG,
She specializes in Pinot Noir (some great ones) normally sold direct from the winery or to restaurants. In Charlotte, NC Bonterra and Zebra Restaurants carry her wines. She was one of the female pioneers in the business. I had the chance to meet her (and her husband, son, son's girl friend) when I attended a Triangle Wine Experience event (in 2003 I think) and was seated at her table! I asked if she had attended UC-Davis (yes) and whether there had been many women attending at that time. I think she told me only two women (or maybe it was only two who had actually gone into the wine industry). Her husband also told me that it was a rare treat for them to be drinking her wines that night because they can't be drinking up the profits of the business. I didn't like the Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (blueberry flavors) as well as the other we tried which was from older plantings.

The other, and even more significant woman in the forefront, was Zelma Long. She and hubby Bob established Long vineyards in the mid-70s and she went on to become President of Simi, the 1st woman to head a major winery. Merry was the driving force behind Matanzas Creek. WW

I used to love the Matanzas wines of old ...

Now she tries to push $54 Pinot -- no thanks.
