1998 Covey Run, Syrah, Barrel Select, Yakima Valley, Washington, $15, 9,797 cases. The nose of this wine defines leather aromas. Dark fruit, pepper and cedar notes lurk in the background. These aromas are repeated on the palate, with moderate but silky tannins and a long, lovely finish. 88/92.

1999 Montpellier, Syrah, California, $7. Juicy berry aromas and a bit of earthiness play on the nose. Mixed berry jam, delicate American oak flavors, and firm but supple tannins round out this overachiever. 86/91.
