Brown vs Green bottles

Learned something that I did not know before.

Apparently Green bottles are for wines from MSR and brown bottles are for wines from the the Rhine and others..

Engineer--that once was the case, but no more. Just the other night I had a Mosel Riesling that came in a brown bottle, and it was not a hock bottle, but one of those long-necked Alsatian style bottles (St. Urbans-Hof 2003).

It was great because I was doing a class on Riesling and the students were tasting blind. Some of them tried cheating by looking at the bottles--didn't work.

Incidentally, the tasting included Mosel, Alsace, Washington, Oregon and Finger Lakes. Unanimous decision of the class--the other regions should be forced to sign a no-compete contract with the Finger Lakes. The FLakes wines outpaced every one of the others. The Washington and Oregon stuff was mainly one-dimensional, and that dimension was sugar.

The Mosel suffered from H2S and the Alsatian--Trimbach 2002--was a flabby waste of dollars.

Yes, but 2003 is not a typical year for climate in Europe and I hope you didn't discourage them from trying other German Rieslings. Many German wines are still a bargain price-wise.

I had almost removed all memories of the blue bottle..........AARRRGGGGHHHHHHHHHH..........time to go back into rehab...........

On the differences in color for 2003, was it because there was just too much juice and they had to bottle it in whatever bottles they could find? or was this something else....

Engineer, the bottle code has gone out the window.

WOW, I wasn't turning anyone on or off--it was their unanimous decision based on blind tasting. All the wines were 2003 vintage.

The Mosel suffered from hydrogen sulfide on its way to mercaptan--rotten egg smell with a little boiled cabbage thrown in.

There's a recently released German Riesling in a blue bottle called RELAX. We have it in the shop, but I haven't had the nerve to try it yet.

Had a bottle of Relax at Guppy's in Indian Rocks Beach during recent trip. It was decent enough and handled a wide variety of seafood. I had scallops, and Bev had a trifisha.

I've seen the relax, there does not appear to be a vintage designated or did I just miss that. If not, then is this a multi-year cuvee?

It is a mass produced NV wine, but much nicer that most of this ilk.

Were the blue bottles not Nahe orginally?
