My wine shop is having an Alsacian tasting this sunday. I'll take notes and let you know how it was.

Great fun. Meet the owner of Vicker's Winery who is a small chard producer here in Idaho. He invited me out to taste some day. Here are the 10 wines that were served

"Warm Up" Wine - 1999 Hugel "Gentil" (10.99) - This is a blend of pretty much any grape grown in Alsace. Light, acidic, light fruity scent that is followed on the palate. Very refreshing.

1999 A. Schere Pinot Planc (10.99) - Pears on the nose and palate, soft acidity, very light wine.

1997 Hugel Riesling (15.50) - Apples with a hint of peaches on the nose and palate, good strong acidity.

1999 Weinbach Cuvee Ste. Catherine Riesling (26.00) - Crisp and clear yellow with green tint. Pears and floral on the nose. Very clean smelling. Soft acid with a long, floral finish. This was my favorite of ones we had. The guy I buy wine from called Weinbach the "holy grail" of Alsace wine.

1998 Trimbach Pinot Gris (15.99) - Green pears on the nose and palate with a hint of peaches. Long acidic finish. Very sweet on the tip with a tart finish. Also one of my favorites.

1998 Trimbach Gewurtraminer (15.99)- Spicey orange scent with strong Asian spice tones on the nose. Soft acid with an oily feel.

1997 Hugel Gewurztraminer "Hommage a Jean Hugel" (38.50) - Floral, soft perfume on the nose. Very refreshing when it hits the tip of the tongue. Medium weight with a long spicey finish. I am not a huge fan of Gewurzt but this was my favorite of the ones had today.

1995 Ostertag Gewurztraminer (28.50) - Soft scent of perfume, almost nutty scents. It was slow to reveal orange spice that I am used to in the scent and taste of Gewurzt. The scent seems to fill the mouth, odd. Medium feel.

1999 Albert Mann Gewurztraminer "Grand Cru Furstentum" (22.00) - Agressive scent of orange spice and perfume on the nose and palate. Full bodied.

1998 Weinbach Pinot Gris Altenboug "Cuvee Laurence" (42.00) - Muted nose. Very spicey on the palate. Good acid. Very full bodied and rich. This is the most interesting Pinot Gris I have every had.

Bucko,

You better not let Mrs. Bucko catch you shipping love letters to the Weinbachs in empty bottles...she'll take one of them bottles and leave a knot up the side of your head that will leave people askin' if you're growing a second head.
