04 Oliver Maximum Port

Wowsa, this is the first port I've had. 20% alc. nearly opaque with a tinge of garnet. thick like cough syrup. Black cherry with a touch of earthy spiciness on the nose. Taste about the same but with a kick! Interesting. No wonder this comes in a small bottle, a person might hurt themselves with too much at a time. Does this sound typical for ports? WP

Heh, there's a variety of port out there, but that description is not offline with a basic ruby.
I've had some very good and some very bad ruby from mid-western wineries, so I'd try a half-bottle of Graham's Six Grapes to see what a pretty traditional ruby is like for comparison's sake.

You might want to try a tawny sometime, they're quite different with the added advantage that you can leave a bottle open a good deal longer than a ruby before it loses its punch.
Hardy's Whiskers Blake from Australia is a favorite of mine and many of the wine-board denizens here. It's less than $15 usually.
I like Tawnys with a light chill on them, but that's just preference.


And with all that sugar and alcohol, these dessert things can be brutal the morning after if you drink too much!!!
