I recently bought a bottle of Taylor's 1977 vintage port which has a bit of sticky brown residue around the cap/seal, particularly the bottom as it presumably was stored label-up. What is it? Is this normal? Is it bad? Does it affect its quality, value, taste?

Thanks in advance for the comments.

Hi Likesred, and welcome to the Wine Board. Hopefully when you pull that long cork, the rest of the crap will come out with it. If not, clean the neck out best you can with a thin, absorbant cloth wrapped around the narrow handle of a wooden spoon. If you had let the bottle stand upright for a week or so, the rest of the sediment should have migrated to the bottom of the bottle. Pour a little out into a drinking glass. If der craben still comes outen, pour a little more until, hopefully, it runs clear, at least as clear as port runs. Run what is in the glass through a filter, into YOUR port glass. Pour the rest, very carefully, for your guests.

Now you know why it is traditional to whack the whole neck off with a sword.

Guess I got my Port mixed up with Champagne. Knew deep in the grey matter, there was a way to break that damn neck off.

Just so long as you kids don't shatter bottles on the barfront and go after each other with the shards, it's all fine by me.

Thanks to all posters for all your helpful info, and the rest too. Especially to innkeeper for getting the ball rolling. I'm getting thirsty.
I'm going to northern Italy in July (vacation, Yeah!), so my questions on places to stay, wineries in Piemonte, Liguria, etc I suppose should be on the Italy board. But if y'all have any suggestions, I'd appreciate them. I'll check both boards.
Thanks,
LR
