Jed Steele was at our shop for a tasting of Steeles and Shooting Stars yesterday and told me that his new Shooting Star Mendocino was actually some leftover, declassified Pacini Vineyard stuff that he didn't need for his SV Steele bottling. It's DAZZLING stuff, even at its young age and should improve markedly with time. The Steele Pacini was also great, if a little lighter than usual. His Steele Cab Franc was mellow and stately and his Pinot - not that I'm any judge - was KILLER. The whites were also meaty and substantial, especially the WA state Aligote. But the Shooting Star Zin, Jeez, BUY IT. At about $11, it a real...um..Steal.

Nice pun

Sounds like a lot of fun. I always keep some Steele pinot around the house, as I find it a consistent, easy drinker. It is also my "fall back" restaraunt pinot, as I always seem to find it even when the rest of the wine list isn't singin' to me. Good stuff -- I'll have to start trying some of his zins, too!

One of our most memorable Thanksgivings involved a bottle of Steele, DuPratt Zinfandel.

Thanks for the heads-up. Had a bottle of the 97 Shooting Star in SD and that lil' hummer has developed some lush with its' muscle. WW Forgot to mention it was the Lake Cabernet. The memory's the 2nd thing to go.

I'm a fan of the Jed Steele 1999 Pinot Noir from Carneros. I purchased two bottles at the grocery store but cannot find it there now. Maybe the 2000 or 2001 will be available soon. I also liked his Catfish Zinfandel at a Nantucket Wine Festival tasting two summers ago but cannot find that locally.

I picked up a 2004 Steele Catfish Vineyard Zin on the way down just by chance, not remembering this thread. It was teriffic! From century old vines, this wine is a field blend of zin and at least 5 other unnamed grape varieties. This zin showed deep notes of zinberry, blackberry, ripe raspberry, bramble and spice. The finish was very long. 13.5% Alc/vol. $22 from my favorite wine shop above Lewis Delaware. Paired with bbq ribs, fries and slaw. Less than 1000 cases produced.
