1999 Chateau St. Jean, Merlot, Sonoma County, California, $25. Layers of cherry, chocolate and blackberry aromas intermingle on the nose. The aromas are echoed on the palate, with additional tobacco notes and well-integrated oak. The tannin structure is firm but supple. An easy to like Merlot. 89/89.

Bucko,

Do you consider Chilean reds the best value on the market dollar for dollar? What are your favorite Merlot bargain picks?

Thanks,
Jim

No, I find southern France wines to deliver the most bang for the buck for my palate.
