1997 Agricole Vallone Salice Salentino Rosso Riserva. It also has "Vereto" on the lable, not sure what that means....

Anyways, the guy at the wineshop recommended this $9 bottle. It has negro amaro and malvasia nera grapes. This was a very enjoyable bottle. It was very balanced, with a earthy/peppery finish that was reminiscent of Rhone, also had pepper/spice on the nose. It had a nice, ruby color and was medium bodied. So far this is guy is 4/4 on recommendations.

Warms my heart. A good Salice is a thing of beauty, and still at a reasonable price.

Currently sipping on a 1996 Candido Salice Salentino. Black earth, mushrooms and black pepper, with a tobacco undertone. And at only $7.99! It needs pasta with meat and tomato sauce, with lots of garlic, and a fresh spinach salad with olive oil, black olives and Reggiano for dessert. (Think I'll start and end with dessert, to hell with the pasta!)

Yep. Those southern Italian reds are good with tomato sauce. I said it somewhere else but IK thinks otherwise. ...
