One day while we were waiting for a load of grapes to arrive at the winery this fall, I asked Bob what his all-time favorite Mayacamas wines are. For the Chardonnay, he ranked the '97 in his top three --- but specifically in the magnums. So I bought one, which we drank at Christmas dinner last night. It was a beautiful, classic Mayacamas Chardonnay. Golden-yellow color, no fading whatsoever on the edges (surprise surprise, right?). Nose of white and black fig, citrus blossoms, and a touch of French oak spice. On the palate, you get loads of minerals, a slight note of smoke, more of that fig, and hints of citrus and tropical fruits (maybe some mango, pineapple, grapefruit rind). Nice long finish, although it was a little hotter than I would have liked -- the only flaw I noticed in the wine. It's 14% alcohol.

Quite good the second day; maybe even better. The flavors have melded together even more nicely, and the heat on the finish has gone away.

Overall, I'd say I slightly prefer the '99 Mayacamas Chard, although they're very close.

One of 3 SW great drinking experiences I've had was the 78 of the nice Mr Travers. Had it in 89 and 'twas nowhere near on the down-snort. WW
