1990 B.V. Reserve

A non-wine drinking buddy stopped by for lunch so sure as the blazes twernt gonna' open the 90 or 91 so made do with a Penfolds 398 for lunch. The 90 last nite was kinda' puzzling. Very restrained nose, medium deep ruby, with no browning. Let stay in the glass for 45 minutes before 1st taste. High red fruits, cassis, slightly spicy but without any of the Rutherford dutiness I love. Poured another glass, waited another 45 and still restrained. Another hour later this sucker finally starts showing the Georges I so love. This bottle definately needed more time. Sheesh!!! How long does this sucker think I've gots left to wait? On the last glass finally flashed traces of one of my defining wines, its' 20 vintages earlier copy. The 70 Reserve still carries a spot in my " Top 10 Alla' Time Charlie ". WW

I like Rutherford dust too. One example that some Cal wines do speak of terroir.

Ah ww, seeking that Holy Grail. Few wines compare with that 1970 George, but then Andre T. (I can't spell his surname) was making the wines back then...great, great winemaker.

Tscheletoffitposmty. Or something Close. He opened a bottle of 59 he had under his bed for us to drink. Never had a cellar. Walked the walk and talked the talk his whole life. What a legacy. WW

The best part was that he smoked packs of cigarettes a day--and it never seemed to ruin his talent for tasting.
