Just found this one - says it's made by Stag's Leap. Any opinions?

One of the better 2nd labels from Napa. In top vintages is one of the P/Q leaders. WW

Thanks Weenie. I knew I could depend on you! I went out and bought another bottle tonight on your rec. Now I have a 2002 and '03. Will post TNs when I open.

Haven't tried the 03. ASMOF, I haven't tried too many 03s' from Napa. All reports are a spotty vintage. WW

It is indeed made by Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. Cost is much lower than even their regular bottlings (SLWC). Then even higher is Artemis at about $40 per bottle, FAY is about $75, SLV is about $110 and Cask 23 is $150 per bottle.

They do not sell the the Hawks's Crest and SLWC together at the tasting room.

Went to a Wine Club tasting one day and a lot of 03's were already out including the 03 Artemis. My favorite from that tasting was the Ramey. (others included off the top of my head, whispering dove, Hess Estate, Robert Mondavi, ...damn...memory going...I'll get this tonight).

Full list of 2003's tried at The Wine Club a few weeks ago:

Simi Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Buehler Estate Napa
Mondavi Napa
Hess Estate Napa
Turnbull Napa
Chimney Rock Stag's Leap
Whitehall Lane Napa
Whistering Dove Stag's Leap District
Caymus Napa
Chappellet Signature Series Napa
Stag's Leap Wine Cellar's Artemis
Ramey Diamond Mountain

My first reaction to these wines (I admittedly had a bit of a cold when I was there), was how seemingly straight forward they were, but not in a massive kind of way. Only with the Artemis, the Ramey and the Camus did we get any really nice complexity in the wine, otherwise, straightforward, faultless (although at times a bit too forward and overoaked) wines.

Just opened the 2003 Hawk's Crest. Not bad, but as Eng said in his TN above, very straightforward. Not overoaked, not complex, a good table cab, great with food, but it did not make my socks roll down. I am more impressed with Hess and J. Lohr in this price range.

If you're looking for a good food wine, the Hawk Crest does the job. If you're looking for a a kick butt sipping Cab, it won't work.
