Big Nose, this thing smells sweet.

I can smell it from a couple of feet away!

The nose is agressive, bourbon style, topical, coconut, almonds, vanilla. As advertised there is mango on the palate. Net and not out of place in this spirit, spicy, hints of oak, coco husk, and walnut skin. This finish is quite long but the heat was quite noticeable,. more than its 40% might suggest. Lacks the smoothness of a good scotch but has every bit the punch. I'm not sure I'm a believer in this particular example from the perspective of price and quality. I think there are better bourbon values..imagine that!

When Remy bought Bruichladdich last year, we should have expected that this brand would be moved up market. This will be the case but some of the changes will impact the US more. I'd stock up on whatever 10 and Rocks and PC you can get your hands on.

-Bruichladdich Rocks and Port Charlotte Peat Project will be discontinued effective immediately

-Bruichladdich “The Laddie” 10 year/PC 10 year will become allocated items and will take a price increase

-Bruichladdich “Organic” will no longer be available in the U.S. – travel retail only

-Bruichladdich “Octomore” will no longer be sold in the U.S. – duty free only.

-Bruichladdich Botanist Gin will take a $10 price increase per bottle

Apparently there is only 63 bottles on this the US. ..So ....crack.....

I knew nothing about this whisky when I bought it. I was told that this was released with some fanfare in honor of a master Distiller who had just celebrated his 5th decade at the distillery. that is quite a feat and we can celebrate just the loyalty alone. Now to the hard stuff.

Initially, I was kindalet down. Don't get me wrong, ice enough drink, good loads in proportions of orange, honey, vanilla, bits of caramel. it has a good density of favors and it is very smooth. Definitely fruity but more so the sensation of sweetness. Then after a while, I settled down with this and started to really enjoy it. It has a wonderful balance to this, a certain, lasse-faire attitude, time is a wonderful educator sort of feel to it. As if you know that you would enjoy this much more after working with the stuff for 5 decades, and not just drinking it for 10 years. I did not want to take the marketing hype into the equation, but this is one drink that I think experienced drinkers will enjoy a whole lot more than point markers....

I was in Manchester Airport today and there was a complete evacuation of the terminal. so naturally I needed a dram after..headed straight to the Duty Free store and tried this. While this felt like a nice dram with lots going on, the most attention getting of the flavours was in fact the very soft red wine flavors. It would have been nice to taste the wine too but this wine overtone (and I use that word because it felt like it floated over the whisky, not really completely part of it, but not a bad thing). Though it was interesting, I'm not really sure that it was a great whisky.
In fact, I paid for a bottle of the new Highland Park Sigurd.

Through the extreme generosity of the Engineer, I received some samples of single malts. One says "with the compliments of Falkirk Distillery." We thought this might be the first new Lowland Scotch in some time. Just tried it and this is not a Lowland! Totally unpeated and a bit viscous with some very nice toffee notes - definitely a Highland. The back label gives it away - Glengoyne 10 yo. So, I did some research and it seems Falkirk has secured a library of whiskies from several other distilleries and is passing them out until their distillery is completed and they start making whisky. So, any release from Falkirk's own stills is several years away. Still and all, the Glengoyne 10 is a wonderful whisky and as my research shows has won several awards. Thanks so much, Eng.

Powers Irish Whisky. This would actually be a 10 yo single malt, except for the way they make it. They add a significant amount of unmalted barley to the mash bill. Then they triple distill. The result is a very smooth, slightly sweet, quite light sip. My favorite Irish, and I'm not alone. Turns out this is the largest selling Irish whisky in Ireland. I would definitely recommend this one.

There is something special about the Mac 18 of this year. People know about it and it is next to impossible to find this bottle now anyways (most have been consumed). But if anyone is able to get a taste of this anywhere, do so.

All I can say is Wow. this is a whisky caught in is full prime of life, fully matured yet amazingly complete. The nose is like a fantastic cognac, full of rancio, before you get to the other notes. and there is more when you taste it, super texture, super long amazing stuff. If you can find it nowadays, expect it to be the wrong side of a $1000 bill, but man is it worth the entry price!
