Tonight we had a lobster boil to help our rec department in our town of 1800. We went and toted a Finger Lakes Riesling with us. Didn't ask if this was permissible. Not only was it, but we received many complements for our "ingenuity"! Have a feeling there will be many wine tote sales soon.

A friend forwarded this (no business attachment from either him or me) and it seems to be an interesting tool.

http://www.coravin.com/

For me, It would allow me to attack a number of bottles all at once but with the intent to finish them within a few weeks. I'm not sure hwo wine ages under argon...so definitely not going to risk some really expensive bottles that I intend to age.

Only concern is that the auction houses will now need to look at all of the capsules to make sure that nothing is pierced (dont want people pullint out small samples.....)

Somehow, I've begun to start to collect old wine jars from Asia.

start with some Jin dynasty (1115–1234) jars that held fruit/rice wines, then then it went to the cups and other associated items. This week I was at an auction for chinese art and picked up an Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) wine jar. This thing is 15 inches tall and about 10 inches at its widest point. No major chips and not broken pieces, in original brown glazing which is about the only flaw as Han prefered green glazing. Still to have a 2000 year old piece of history in the cellar (where I put it), feels just great!.... provides the rest of the wine with a it of perspective.

Sometimes I'm too lazy to pull out a decanter when it's only me drinking and I'm also not waiting for the wine to open up by itself. This is not something I advertise at home as i just bought 10 decanters of the same time just for the purposes of decanting wines and double blind tastes tests (William Sonoma outlet store is now my favorite wine paraphernalia store....Riedel merlot and syrah decanters for $10 and $15 each......).

I wanted to buy a vinturi for some time just cuz it looks nice but it was always just too much money. I bought one of these last time I was in Napa and visiting the tasting rooms. Most of the rooms that I visited noted difficulties working with Vintruri the company with and as such some are now pushing this much cheaper unit. I bought one after trying it out and it works pretty well on brand new cabs. I've only used it a few times after I got back and it works as advertised. Not as nice looking nor as sexy as the Vinturi version but 1/3 the price too. Only thing is that is is a little difficult to pull off so I always use a large napkin to cover the spout and bottle opening to ensure not spills. So far so good but only using it few too few times to justify buying it originally. Glad I did not pay 3 x more for something that might have had the same fate.

What a revoltin' development THIS is!

Have been popping a bunch of sparklers in the last few months, esp. Prosecco and Cava, with a few champers.... and have really given a workout to my Screwpull Cork Catcher. It's a nifty plastic jobbie that fits over the knob of a sparkler's cork; twist it into place to lock the cork, twist the bottle with the other hand, and Blooey! Out pops the cork. But instead of bouncing off the ceiling, china cabinet or your right eye, the cork is caught by the top of the Cork Catcher. At about $20, I've given away several as gifts in recent years.

Well, popping a champers at Thansgiving, the cork blew right through the plastic cross-bar at the top of the Cork Catcher. And now, here we are, approaching Christmas and New Year's, and the Catcher is kaput.... unless SuperGlue can save the day.

I've used the Catcher several times since the rupture, but each time the cork has ignored the Catcher and charged off its merry way, scaring the bejeebers out of whoever's in the line of fire.

If SuperGlue doesn't work, may have to resort to duct tape.

A few notes:

- Christmas gift from daughter (along with a few bottles of wine) was the book "Thomas Jefferson on Wine" by John Hailman (University Press of Mississippi/Jackson, 2006). Very detailed description of TJ's evolution as a wine-lover, including his notes on producers and his purchases. Fascinating, 457 pp.

- Beloved Screwpull Pro broke irreparably on Christmas Day while trying to uncork one of those 6 (now thought to be 7) bottles. Don't know which was the culprit but was probably operator error.

- Christmas gifts from the lovely wife (in addition to wines) was a "Preservino Professional Wine Preserving Kit", that injects argon through a rubber stopper into an opened bottle to preserve remaining contents (assumes there are contents remaining, of course.... BIG assumption).

- Gave sister-in-law a mixed case and a copy of the book "The Widow Clicquot", since her usual bubbly is Yellow Label.

Seems like as good a place as any to post this.

Have been looking for years for a way to recycle used corks. Last night, while preparing to grill some burgers for Labor Day, decided to toss a double handful into the oak fire to see what would happen. (These were real corks, not synthetic bungs.) Holy smokes! They caught fire like they were cardboard, swelled up to three times their normal size and smoked like blue blazes. Had to let 'em die down, then plucked 'em out with a long pair of tongs and tossed 'em into a bucket. A bit more oak restored the integrity of the fire for cooking.

Won't be trying that again.

I typically view new wine products with a healthy skepticism. This is a small jar, which contains what appear to be BBs. Basically, you dump them in the decanter with a little water, then swirl them around until those pesky stains that develop over time, and that you can't get out with a regular decanter scrub brush, are removed. We've soaked and cleaned our decanter countless times with everything we could think of, and I could never get rid of those little wine stains in the bottom of the decanter. Anne gave me these as a stocking stuffer for Christmas, and I tried them for the first time tonight.

The stains are gone. They work, and fast. I'm thrilled, and the decanter looks great. She got them through the Wine Enthusiast catalog, and they run about $20. Better than getting a new decanter, that's for sure. Plus, I really like my decanter, so I wasn't thrilled with the notion of replacing it.

Thumbs up for this product.

From International Wine Accessories, those purveyors of all manner of nifty wine gizmos, comes the infrared wine thermometer. In two models, one a slim keychain style and the other a fatter pocket-clipped type, its to be pointed at a bottle of wine and illuminated with a tiny infrared beam to measure the liquid's temperature. It needs to be close to the bottle - one to two inches away - without touching the glass. Temp is read on a little digital LED in the side of the widget.

I received the pocket-clip model yesterday and just now flight-tested it in the cellar by sampling the temperature of several bottles, some on low racks, some on upper ones, with different exposures to the cooling unit. With the thermostat set at 57F and that temp confirmed on the Radio Shack sanity checker on an upper rack, measured temperatures of the bottles ranged from 53.7F to 57.3F. Pretty slick! $24.95 from IWA (the keychain model which I did not order is $44.95). Item number is HM174-001 in their "Holiday 2006" catalog, page 39.

They also now offer a "ScrewPull Cork Catcher" for use with bubblies... intended to help you loosen those sometimes troublesome corks on sparklers and catch the cork before it does irreparable damage to your better half's china cabinet (and your marriage). Got one of those, too, for $19.95 (page 37, same catalog).
Just ordered another pair of the same for gifting.
