2013 Tribunal North Coast Red Wine (alcohol level 15.1%). This Trader Joes' unique wine costs $9.99 and is a blend of just about every California red grapes. We had heard of it before and decided to give it a shot. Not bad at all of a $10 wine. It gives good fruit upfront as well as on the nose. It is quite complex in the middle and finishes nicely. We enjoyed it with meatloaf, and will do so again tonight with the other half bottle. Yum!

A friend of my took me to the wine pick up party for this winery. Quite impressed with the wine. The chards were good as were the pinots. This was something different. They said it was an Italian varietal so I was a bit precondition for something tannic and acidic. The wine was very light in color like a Nebbiolo. There was that hint of orange tones. But the nose was positive fresh and on tastes totally different. It was built like a rose and tasted like a rose. Lovely really, perfect sun drenched early November 80 degrees late afternoon..... What the hell am I living in Boston for......

This Az winery has made some major strides (IMHO) and with some tweaking this will be a nice drink. 88% Tempranillo,6% Graciano, and 6% Mourvedre the major flaw in this wine is the heat. Coming in at 15.5% alc this got my Mojo running on the 1st sip. Nice fruit and a respectable nose taming this hummer down will make it very attractive and drinkable besides. Given to me by a friend for an opinion this is it. A pleasant surprise. Not recommending as is but definitely will watch the progress of this winery. WW

N/V Apothic Red Wine, California (Alcohol level: 13.5%). This was a gift, but research reveals it runs around $10. It is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, in that order.

We popped it last night with Greek Chicken Pilaf made with boneless thighs, and a lot of garlic. The latter helped to stave off the effects of this fruit bomb!

This bend was on sale at me local grocery for 8.88 less 30% so gave it a dance. Has Cab, Syrah, Merlot and Zin in unknown amounts but a good blend. Tasty stuff with a nice mouthfeel and a decent 3&1/2 lapper finish. Heck of a buy at the price. Hustled me fat buns back down and bought the remaining 7 bottles. WW ( Forgot to mention the 13.5% alc was a plus)

What a lovely little wine! Nose is subtle but with the typical funk. the wine is dry but has a bit of sweetness in it. Nice ripe fruit, just mellow and slowly moving into its second phase. It is still garnet in colour but the wine has lost its luster.

This is part of a vertical tasting of Musar of the '83, 88, 90 and 94.

All of these wines were similar in color, specifically, the were all what I would call bricking and transparent. Much like a good '70's bordeaux, these wines are now devoid of any primary fruit, and are onto mostly secondary flavours and dried fruits and leathers, etc,. That said, all of the wines, except perhaps for the 90, were all in good shape and were a pleasure to taste.

Ethereal. Outstanding. While definitely recognizatble as a Musar next to its betherans, this one stood easily above the others. So wonderfully balanced, and complex, lithe yet powerful, not at the top of its game yet. Nose of dried fruits, figs and apricots, stone fruits, a nice bit of barnyard funk in this one, peppercorn, leather and hint of chocolate. This wine is a medium plus bottle but so much smoother than the rest. Great mouthfeel. good acidity in the structure but never protruding like the '90.

Showed what a classic Musar with some age on it could be like!!!! This was my wine of the night.

This is nice. a nicely maturing musar that despite not being as good as the best in this vertical, has nicely accepted its role in impresssing the crap of the participants of this wine testing.

Again, a deeper bricking colour with jsut a hint of garnet red. This wine is still reaching for maturity but its close. Nose and palate of good dried cherry, dried fruits and berry, tobacco, cigar box, tar, leather. Good solid structure still.

The wine of this vintage awas clearly the most advance of this vertical. The lightest in color, and Musars of his age are already in advanced brick colors, lightest and most reserved nose of the bunch, mot towards a simplier beefy, spices and floral nose. a bit more tart too acidity showing its teeth a bit more. Thought this would be the oldest wine.

Also in terms of nose and flavour density, it is the lowest. A bit of black tea at the end is nice but not all of one piece and seems to be fading.

Part of a vertical tasting of Musar including the '83, '88, '90, '94.

This was probably the largest wine of the Musar vertical for me, perhaps a bit less complex but apparently a very hot year for this wine. Thus a touch of VA still in my glass after being decanted for many hours.

On the nose, dried red fruits, dirt, earth, dried clay, dried firewood, , perfumed and roses, hint of manure. on the Palate, this wine is one of the softer examples, still goo ddred fruits, cherry, spicesoft and subtle notes of dried red fruits, cinnamon, cherry, wild strawberry, and burnt orange peel. ASolid bottle, medium light bod but with medium plus acidity, Nicely complexity but a bit different than other Musars due to vintage.
