This is a great Sauternes, definitely a half step behind the Rieussec adn a step ahd a half behind the Yquem but a beauty in its own right

Beautiful explosive nose chrysanthemum, creme brûlée, dried lychee, citrus, hints of marmalade and toffee, both on the nose and the palate. The texture is very smooth, with a very long finish. Great structure, good refreshing acidity. This thing will last forever.

I guess there has been reports of a lot of bottle variation of this bottle. What a shame because my bottle was just perfect. If we did not taste the 2001 Yquem, this would have been the king of the hill. hell, king of the mountain.

This is a massive wine with a expressive nose, honey, apricot, creme brulee coconut, and it jsut goes on and on. The palate is much the same except the texture is just super smooth. Large structure. Density of fruits hides this unless you look like crazy for it. Wonderful wine.

After reading about the fact that this was a bit lighter than most 2001's I wanted to try an it and see it for myself. They were certainly right, this wine is much lighter on its feet than other 01's but not in a bad way. tropical fruit pinches the nose right away but it is like a like fruit salad. Not big on structure and lacking the massiveness that is '01, this wine is still compelling but in comparison with other 01's would come up short for the vintage wehn som much more could have been achieved. Very attractive but wanted more.

I finally caved an opened up one of these wines....been waiting for a while :0 one statement.

This is the best Yquem I have ever tasted in my life. This is a Legend in the making. This is a one year wine. This is everything everyone has ever said about this wine. It was in fact a bit closed down but it one sniff, one sip was all that was needed to confirm it. To see this wine flex its muscle is just amazing. So fresh still, so large bu this thing is insanely balanced.

Wow,.. what a difference a bottle makes. Recently I had this with some friends and it was a very average,...bottle.

Tonight, someone else brought this one and while this is not the most magical port I've every tasted, it did a much better job. There was more density to the flavours, a bit nutty, fully mature with hints of spices on the nose. This was a nice treat indeed. Exactly what you would look for in a mature port, but no blockbuster.

oh buy......about as close to perfection as it gets.... just behind the '89 and the still insanely young 2001.......

Perfect texture, smooth and impossibly light. lingers for a night. Only thing that held it back for me was the balance of the resiny note, but oh so minor, orange, honey, apricot, slightly exotic spices in perfect levels. super rich without being sugar and cloying, hyper elegant, is there such a thing?? Impossible to describe properly without having had it.... only thing I can compare the experience to is a 97 Harlan...I know....that won't make me a popular guy as that is a rather controversial wine. I'll drink both any day, any time anywhere that someone will buy it for me

I picked up this baby direct from the winery a few years ago.

This is a lovely wine, definitely not a mind blow wine from a great vintage but a decent wine from a decent vintage. Nose is perhaps a bit muted and not really flamboyant but deep with honey, dried fruits like apricot. On the palate, lush and smooth but much the same in terms of flavors. Rock solid an entirely enjoyable.

Before one dismisses this as another feeble attempt to imitate the real thing, you should know that this comes from one of their own vineyards that field grows Tinto Cao, Toriga Nacional, and Souzao. They fortify and construct it with best care and ingredients possible.

It is ready to drink now but will keep for many years. An absolutely delicious Port that matches well with chocolate. Yum!

I had this one night side by side with an all dominating Fontodi 1997 Vin Santos so perhaps it was not a great comparison.

Having said that, this wine is not aging gracefully, at least the bottle I had, it is limp, lacking structure, and had aromas that suggested more decay than nicely aging. Nothing to go back for. Hopefully it was just a bad bottle.

Seems I am building a rep as a cheap wine guy, which I guess I am. I am also a dessert wine guy. Unfortunately in these days, we all know that nobody is buying into botrytis wines for $10.

(I can't think of the name of the estate, but back when I could buy La Tour Blanche for $19.95, I picked up some 'left on the shelf' Sauternes for $4 per 750ml. I do recall that the Wine Spectator reviewed the wine unfavorably in their first big compilation of wines, but do not recall name or vintage.)

But I'm not here to talk about inexpensive Sauternes or Sauternes at all, but a neitghbor of that town that was unfamiliar to me.

Ever have a Cerons? I hadn't until I could make myself cough up $36 for 500ml bottle of 2005 *Chateau Haura Cerons*.

A very nice wine with all one might expect from a sweet wine of that region. Classic aroma, rich and sweet in the mouth but well balanced by what might be called bracing acidity. Already a few years aged, this wine has a long life ahead of it I am sure.

Too bad I was underwhelmed. I think it was sticker-shock. Yes, yes, I realize this is a time when one pays $20 for a Monbazillac and $25 for a Cadillac if they can be found, but that $4 Sauternes at the top and $5 bottles of the above wines are all stuck in my long term memory and I think sub-consciously and unfairly influenced my appreciation of this wine. However, my tasting experience was what it was.

That said, I will repeat that this was a very nice, elegant bottle of wine. If you are a fan of Sauternes/Barsac wines and you have the money to 'broaden your horizons', you ought to look into this AOC.
