This bottle is starting to come out of its slumber I believe. The vintage tags are there, lush red fruits, great acidity in the structure, the density has absorbed the use of oak, this thing is still very fresh and lush, but the good signs are there, the texture is smoothing out, the tannins are receding, the structure is integrating into the rest of the wine and there are no real holes drops in across the front to mid palate, and it has good persistence. Got a few more and will revisit in a couple of years.

As we know, '87 was not a great year in Burgundy. However, I was hoping that the vineyard in this case would override the weather and in this case, I had a very good bottle. For an almost 30 year old bottle, this performed very admirably. A nice fruit bouquet came out of the glass, the wine texture was just fantastic, smooth and still some lingering hints of the lush fruit. Moving to dried cherries a nice backbone. Persistence was good as well. This bottle exceeded its humble presentation.

Unfortunately a bit of a product of the vintage. I find this wine to be just a bit too bright and acidic to be an easy match for food. Th nose is very nice, Nice start there, aromatic, bright, light red fruit. On the palate much the same red berries, sour cherries, hints spices, wood. The texture is up front and center, creamy for the acidity. But the wine lacks focus, and is a bit austere mid palate, coming back with the structure to take it to a slightly acidic finish. Refreshing but not very balanced at this point in time.

I love Roumier and yet from a value perspective is less compelling. I love it and I love to drink it but each time I pull a cork, I just wish the stuff was a bit less expensive.

Having said that this is a decent wine. Not a Bonnes Mares level wine but decent. The concentrated is quite impressive, with ripe red fruit, cherries, still a not fully integrated oak, and a broad profile. The tannins are still there and the wine has great grip. Finish is of good length.

so good wine but for the price could have gotten a bit more.

I don't get this. So many people love this winery and I even went to the release party and tried so many of their wines through various vintages, but this wine is not for me. It's flavor profile is nothing I'm use to and it tastes candied to me.

Not that I am looking for burgundy all the time, I love trying new stuff, but this thing tastes like a softdrink versison of Burgundy. Nice texture to be sure cranberry, stemmy, but distinct flavors versus a nicely integrated whole.

Better tasters than I am love this wine so it must be good, but it's just not a good fit for my palate.

This is an interesting style of pinot noir for me. Many people love this style and don't understand why I do speak better of it. For me, I find these Pinots a bit Candied. I like them like I like soft drinks, but they are not at the levels of a good burg. I know that they are not trying to be the same thing and I'm glad for the variations.

tasting note: Candied nose, light elegant entry, easy drinking, light berries. medium to medium light body. Nicely put together.

If the notion that the Bourgogne is the wine that is to carry the labels flag, then this winery, with is grand name and prices, is doing very well indeed. Maybe the vintage floated all boats, maybe, like many of the other great names are now doing, declassifying village and even 1er crus wines into great blends for the bourgognes. Regardless of what they are doing, this is an astonishing bottle. 9 years into its life, it is showing very very well right now. Deep and bold, all sorts of fruit, like a berry compote, amazing freshness and balance, this would have passed of as a great Vosne 1er cru from a good vintage or a lovely West Coast Pinot, save for a bit of shortness on the vintage. for $32, there is no better way to spend your money....though it was a few years ago. Maybe we caught it well.

2011 A to Z Wineworks Oregon Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley ($ neighborhood of $10, Alcohol level: 13%). Not sure where this one came from or exactly how much. I think it was Whole Foods in the $10 range. Will look for more as it is a wonderful wine and a bargain from Oregon. It gave a variety of fresh red fruits on the nose and upfront. There was more fruit and smooth body in the middle, and a lovely finish.

We matched it with cooked roast pork in gravy, baked baby Yukon Gold potatoes, and salad. Yum!

We matched it with leftover Christmas goose in gravy, roast Yukon Gold fingerlings, and braised red cabbage.
Thing is just starting to come around and it has some holding power still, Lovely crunchy red berries, good structure, some smokiness (oak not completely integrated), and while not overbearing (definitely medium body even for this vintage), the wine has a good persistence. It lingers. nicely done.

This was quietly resting uncatalogued in my cellar tracker. so a bit surprised to find this. (Also interesting to see that both WW and i ended up with the same vintage, varietal and general location (West Coast) for a wine that day).

Shared with a group of friends who coincidentally had pulled out 2 other Pinots for dinner. One was a splendid Burg that I will post on later. The interesting thing was that they were all very different. This one was the most pronounced of the new world Pinots. Nose was frangrantly fruity and meaty at the same time along with some interesting spices for the trip. On the palate, much the same but there is a hint of sweetness that hits you first on the approach. Red berries is more pronounced than on the nose, texture is just lovely, smooth, lush but in a controlled manner. Tannins appear to have completely receded now. A quietly enjoyable bottle that if there was a hint more complexity, I would have enjoyed it more. As it stands, it was just a step behind the burg....but that's likely my preference versus the wine.

I know that in the past, I've written that I'm not adverse to 03 Burgs despite the heat wave. Well...I'm not sure that this one would fit that bill. For the record, a 10 year old village level wine is holding up quite well but I suspect that it is on the decline. But that is not the problem for me as I am a bit of a necrophile. the problem is that this wine tasted disjointed and unbalanced. Everythign was there , just not together and it tasted like a 03' bordeaux of lesser ilk in that the flavours were broad and falling apart. You could taste the components and especially the higher than normal for '03 acidity. I'm guessing that this was acidified and I wish it was not. it would have been neat to see if it turned out like a Santa B like Pinot for this year instead, it was a bit of a letdown.
