2009 Tobin James, Silver Reserve, Merlot ($48 retail, came with fall 2012 club shipment). Alcohol: 14.4%. This is defiantly not a “Sideways” Merlot. The grapes come from a variety of Paso vineyards that TJ has been getting the best results from over the years for this, their first reserve Merlot. It is rich, deep, and complex, and I’m sure it would hold for many more years. But, it was great now! Drank a half bottle the first night with rib eye steak grilled over charcoal and mesquite chips, the first Early Girls from the garden and the first wax beans from the garden. Fantastic! Last night we matched it with grilled lamb rib chops, baked sweet potatoes, and more sliced Early Girls. Yum!

A great friend of mine is quite familiar with SLWC wines and he has been disappointed of late about the performance of these wines.

He is concerned with their relative lack of aging capacity of these wines. I understand where he is coming from when I tasted this wine. Not back but bricking and and developed already for a wine who's competition may still be relatively youthful for a 12 year old wine, especially one of this price.

Having said that, it was an enjoyable wine for me, earthier and ripe, some tea notes, but not of one piece. If you have one, it should start to go on the drinking list soon.

This was in Magnum

This was just a baby! Proof that Merlot sould not be shunned when handled by the right hands. This is also from the Rector Site which is near its Paraduxx site.

Another solidly constructed wine, sign of the year, the wine shows red and dark fruits, hints of strawberry, cedar, clove and just a bit of coffee, lush smooht, great texture and very deep adn dense. This one was built for some aging indeed but enjoyable now.

2010 was poor vintage in the Oakanagan but this wine's nose was attractive, berries, slight herbs on the nose, clean. I had initially thought 'Great! someone finally let a light vintage be a light vintage and not over compensate.' Oh where did it go wrong,.....

This wine was over extracted, over oaked for the tannins, when it should have been left as a light and austere wine reflecting the vintage. Clipped finished and just splinters left in my mouth.

On the heels of the Ravenswood Zin, we had the 2010 Ravenswood Merlot with dinner tonight. For Judy a panko crusted chicken cutlet. For me beer batter cod filet. With both potato au gratin (David Rosengarten's truly awesome recipe!!), and of course the Merlot. Friday night and no work tomorrow, so we opened a second bottle. Don't ask any questions that require any logical thought in about an hour.

2008 Souverain, Sonoma County, Merlot ($8.99 NH Liq Store Sale): Alcohol level: 14.8%. Don’t know why it sold at this price because it was a very nice wine.

The wine gave you black raspberry on the nose and upfront. Across the palate you get more fruit, hints of vanilla, herbs, and pepper. The finish lingered. The alky level was not noticed at all because of the near perfect balance.

We matched it with grilled loin ends Teriyaki, rice pilaf, and green beans. It was a splendid Saturday evening dinner.

Found this poor lil' orphan hiding in the cellar and decided to stop the whimpering "dwinkmedwinkme" so BRW and I met for lunch at the club. Expecting the unexpected is always the outlook when dealing with any of Toms old wines. From an outstanding vintage we had faint hopes that this hummer mite still have some life..AND by cracky it did. Killer perfume hit the table when the cork was dislodged, a slight amberish rim was the only sign of age. To make a long story longer we nursed this sucker for about 5 minutes before sipping. May have been a year or so from prime time but everybody thot it was sumpin' else. A real testamont to Fred Scherrers' wine making abilities and Toms' masterful attention to the pasture. Good stuff!!!!WW
