2013 Paul D. (Paul Direder), Zweigelt; $12.99 (Whole Foods), Alcohol level: 12.5%. A lovely wine giving raspberry hints on the nose and upfront. More fruit and a great mouth feel in the middle, and a nice finish for a medium bodied wine. We matched it with broiled zucchini, potato cakes, and spinach. Yum!

It feels like Winter has arrived in Toronto and while walking around the LCBO store, I felt like picking up a number of reds from light Cab Francs or harder to find in my area Baco Noirs. They would have been fine with my takeout sushi....(yes..no time for restaurants to night.....My East indian colleagues are already up and at work and emailing...) but I went for a bottle I have not seen in a while. I love this little winery, located some bits away from the niagara wine region.

Crack open the screw cap and I am not disappointed. This is a Canadian Riesling, ripe apple, mineral laced, not as focused as in a German, but that is true of the whole wine so it is not out of place. this is a broader riesling, impresses with a power of the density and length of the wine. Lovely really. Mid palate the citrus takes over, more rind, pink grapefruit rind and it lingers. Not a shy citrus component. Good acidity and nice finish. For $13.99, this is a great deal.

This is a Chardonnay and Welschriesling blend. Welschriesling is not related to Riesling and this has a very different nose. The nose is light, floral, citrusy and just very attractive. Very fresh and young, minerally. The density is also very light for a BA. This does not have the viscosity that you would expect. Chill well and it could be used as a summer pick me up. Should be in a 750 ml Bottle because it is so easy to drink....

What a shame... a highly touted vineyard from great producers and even they cannot compensate for the '03 season, I've got a few more bottles so will try to see if it was just a bad bottle.

Colour shows faster aging than anticipated. IT was definitely a deeper gold, honey color, the most immediately thing is that the typical freshness and appeal of von Kesselstatt is missing. the wine is still pleasant but without the verviness one expects from this vineyard. I've had many 01's and 05's from them and they have all been great, this one limped much farther behind.

So what happeneds when one of the sturdies wines in the world IMHO is matched against some poor handling over the course of three years....this person moved twice, ine the summer, not stored properly, for 8 months stored in a first floor appartment and last year in a basement where the temp gets up to 80 degrees for a prolongued period???

You get a damaged bottle of 02 Riesling Spatlese. This wine however was still drnikable and only because o the structure of the 02 wines did this one survive, if somewhat mared, this abuse. The difference, the wine was very muted, flabby (the white wine equak to being stewed), loss of freshness and not very attractive on the nose, but as it stood, it was a serviceable bottle of white wine.

Really old wine for its type, and probably should have been dead. After all, the vintage wasn't the greatest and the wine isn't the best of their offerings. So, expecting nothing special, I was really, really surprised to taste a wine that still had brightness, acidity and fruit. Lucked out on this one big time!!!! BTW, paired it with stir fried prawns in a black bean/garlic/chili sauce. Worked very well.

You guys know me, I'll pretty much put anything in my mouth if it looks and remotely smells like wine.

A friend of mine explained to me how he got this bottle, he was very proud of it and knew that I was a wine nut so he wanted me to try this. He got this in Canada during the summer, carried it around with him as he backbacked through the cottage country during a hot summer, it went in his luggage during the summer, which promtely got lost and it took a few days to find it during the summer to get it back to him...... To my friend, this is his idea of provenance, tha the could tell yo exactly where this thingg was over the summer.... suffice to say for me, all I could do was smile and knowing what I was in for.....

I know that Serbia makes good wine, so this in no way is a statement about Serbian wine, more about what happens when ANY wines goes through what this bottle did....

OMG...AWGK....heat Stroked and dead on arrival, murky, even the texture was weird, almost oily to the point that I was wondering about microbial growth.....hopefully it was high in alcohol..... I did not get the vintage.

Q m.P, A.P. Nr. 5 160 346 032 99
500 ml. bottle. 7% alcohol by volume. A Terry Theise Estate Selection, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines. Golden Coin prize winner at 1999 Wein-und-Sekt Pramierung. Huxelrebe is the grape variety, Forst is the town (on the Wine Street), Kurt Darting is the producer, and Beerenauslese refers to grapes selected indiviually from a bunch for optimum ripeness (grapes with at least 110 degrees sugar on the Oechsle scale) that may have some botrytis or "noble rot" or "edelfaule."

Rose-tinged amber color. Botrytis nose. On the palate a sensation of very ripe peaches or nectarines and a suggestion of red cherries also. Not too unctuous or syrupy until the bottom of the bottle. (After the first evening I thought I might try pouring some over sliced nectarines the next night but forgot to experiment with it in this way.)
