I'm really a newbie in this corner. The most experience I have with SA wines are with those from Hamilton Russel.

This one was offered to me last night and i thought it would be a good time to try it. the color is very dark, almost black in appearance adn the nose is rather muted for what was to come. On the palate though, this is not a boring wine. Whether you like it or not is up to you but there is plenty goign on. First a rather unfamiliar grouping of herbs and berries for me, followed by a very creamy blue cheese sensation. Finish was medium plus and not unpleasant. My friend like this wine a lot and I'm more impartial. Certainly interesting and not bad but not sure I wanted a second full glass either.

2006 Marquis Phillips S2 Cabernet Sauvignon

There's a wine/liquor store several miles from my home which I haven't visited for several years as they had problems with selling untaxed cigarettes and some illegal gambling issues. Recently I learned that the business was sold to new owners of Indian nationality and I thought I'd stop in and check the place out. The store has a large wine collection and different shelving has been put in place with every bottle standing straight up. The wines are also not grouped by varietal, region or color, except merlot, very strange, so one just walks the aisles looking at every bottle. There are many older bottles, 5 to 10 years old from good to very good wineries. So I'm strolling the middle aisle and spot the above lone bottle at $13.99 retail so I grab that along with a 2002 Wolf Blass gold label shiraz as my two purchases. The S2 was wonderful, full throttle, in your face, larger that life cab with deep blackberry and black fruits flavor, hints of Chambord, tar and dark chocolate. Initially a touch of heat from the 15.9% Alc/vol which calmed down after some time in the glass. The S2 was rich, somewhat rustic and fun to visit but I wouldn't want a steady diet of this monster...fun for the moment though.

2008 Henry’s Drive, Pillar Box Red, Padthaway Australia ($9.99): Alcohol level: 14.5%/ This is a rustic blend of Shiraz 66%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, and Merlot 9%. It was chock full of sediment. First I exchanged it between bottle and decanter a few times, washing out each vessel each time. Then I ran it through a decanter strainer. It still tasted a little too rustic. So I ran it through a 2 cup unbleached coffee filter. That did the trick; and I will start there with the second bottle in the cellar.

It turned out to be the perfect matched for broiled kielbasa with mustard and horseradish; along with some rustic succotash. Yum, yum for a rustic supper!

It came with a screwtop.

Another of my points chasing efforts hits the glass. Single Vineyard, Estate Grown. This one held up 100%! But...... it is nothing like any Shiraz I've ever had. This tastes undeniably like a high end Zin. Bold, in your face, spicy, and rich. Not what I was expecting at all. Parker rang it up at 98. I wouldn't go that far as I'm not really sure of what to make of it.

Found one that survived! Of the 15 or so 2000-2005 bottles of Shiraz I've gotten into lately, this is the only one not gone by to some extent. Mixed up the varietals with Chateaubriand doing the 2ooo Don Melchor first followed by this Aussie. Both fun in their own way and both just right on bottle time. Gone through most of the off brands with only one or two left until I get to the big boys in my Aussie dept. (Torbreck and Clarnedon.) Hope they held up at the price I paid!

Hey all. Long time! So, been on a just drink it phase of late. Going through my Australian stuff. Started at 2000 and am on my way through 02. All supposed 97-99 pointers from lord Parker. All bought at release and stored at 55. Well, 90+% of them have been flops. Gone by, weak, whatever you want to call it. It's been a long time since I took the work of Mr. Parker or anyone else other than my own pallet and I'm glad I made the switch. These were all wines described as having tons of holding power. Not. Anyways, what do you all think? The nature of Shiraz to be better young? The latest disappointment was an 01 d'Arenberg The Dead Arm . Just gone and done. E&E Black Pepper Shiraz was a little better but didn't last long before quitting on the second glass. Mitolo GAM which is always great young was gone by too. Not bad, just not much there. Makes me wonder what I was doing paying to keep em cool.........

2006 Groom, Barossa Valley, Shiraz (gift from a very nice benefactor). Alcohol level 14.3% which is low by today’s standards. It has nice fruit including plum and dark berries on the nose and upfront. In the middle you get brambly hints of anise, peppers, blackberries and a slight dash of vanilla. The tannins are as smooth as a baby’s bum at this point of development. Great finish.

We matched it with tenderloin steak, seared and roasted 10 minutes at 400 degrees F; baby Yukon Golds roasted with bacon fat and sliced Brandywine tomatoes from the garden. Wonderful Saturday night!

After our anniversary dinner yesterday we returned home and opened the 2001 Marquis Philips Shiraz 9 enjoyed outside in the gazebo. This wine is one when Sarah and Sparky really produced outstanding Oz shiraz IMO. Beautiful fruit, silky and velvety in the mouth. Flavors of blackberry, deep plum and chambord with hints of pepper, licorice and coffee. Just really sexy with a very long finish. Perfectly balanced and many more years ahead of it. This was one of the best shiraz that we've had to date. Wonderful.
Robert van Zanten is owner/winemaker. Imported by Robert Bath Imports, St. Helena, CA. I first tasted this at a wine dinner at Zely & Ritz in Raleigh with Robert Bath in attendance. New World Pinot Noir profile with some oak influence. Nearly opaques purple-red color. Dark fruits and what reminds me of blackberry tea but what probably prompted the description on the label of red and black licorice. (By the third evening it seemed to shed the blackberry tea quality and show more as purple plumlike. I liked it better in the plum spectrum.) Just enough complexity to maintain interest. Some tannins and a long finish. Could possibly go a couple more years.
