On the recommendation of my wine guy these two wines were enjoyed over the last several days of snow.

2011 Mas Carlot "Les Enfants Terribles. 50% Mourvedre and 50% Syrah from old vines. Purity of fruit, spice and a touch of herbs and funk make this wayyy to easy to drink. I think a good bbq wine. $12

2012 BODEGAS ATALAYA Laya (D.O.P. Almansa, Spain) 70% Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell also billed as old vines. Another wine showing purity of fruit with good acidity and balance showing blackberry and dark cherry flavors with an attractive light hand of oak. A perfect wine for a crowd that's not contrived or overly sweet. $9

This S.A. Prum Essence Riesling is only a steal deal if you like your white wines slightly sweet. Categorized as a Qualitatswein, this is 11% alcohol by volume and has a screwcap. Straw color. Crisp, citrusy notes. Easy-drinking wine that does encapsulate some of the "essence" of Mosel Riesling and is usually priced between $9.00 and $13.00. I would rate it somewhere in the 80's. I like it better than some of the other Rieslings I've tried in the same price range that are made to appeal to the broader market.

I've had a couple vintages now of this bottling, and they are consistently very good wines and are outstanding values. I meant to post on this last summer.

Bright gold in color. Lots of lime then lemon lead the way, plus a bit of grapefruit, with just a tiny bit of green pepper in the background. And none of that "cat pee" that ruins so many New Zealand sauvignon blancs for me. Very good, big nose and flavors, and a medium-length finish. Works as a pop and pour, yet a half-empty bottle corked and put back in the fridge still holds up great a day or two later. This wine has enough acidity to kick butt with shrimp cocktail, scallops and a chicken with mustard sauce (I've tried it with all three in the past few days), yet not so much acidity that it can't be enjoyed on its own. Simply a d-mn good bottle of wine and a great value at the $10-12 I usually find it for. A no-brainer case buy at $9.99 per bottle. 89 points.

And I preferred it a bit over the 2009 Mulderbosch Stellenbosch SA Sauvignon Blanc that I also had with these dishes (and costs $20 per bottle). A very good wine, but just liked the Nobilo better even without considering that it's half the price of the Mulderbosch.

Stopped at Midway yesterday and sampled a bunch of wines and these four won for best of show, the last one receiving double gold.

2007 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Alexander Valley, California
$13.99 Very rich and round in the mouth with good structure and balance. Good cab for the price.

2007 Scott Family Pinot Noir
Central Coast, California
$17.99 This was amazing for the price! Very concentrated showing pure raspberry, cherry, clove and earthy nuances.

2007 Fattoria ColSanto Sagrantino di Montefalco
Umbria, Italy
$95.95 6pak case. Rustic in style showing black and red fruit with hints of bitter chocolate and earth. Finishes long with substantial tannins.

RUN TO FIND THIS WINE!!!!
2007 La Tour Coste "Les Trencats" Cotes du Rhone. HOLY MOLY!! I've tasted a bunch of under $15, 2007 CDR's but this is the bomb.
Very floral. Silky in the mouth with flavors of raspberry, chambord, mineral and loamy soil with a very long finish. Bought 2 cases on the spot at $120 each. You do the math.

Great warm weather sipper at $10.99 plus tax. Purchased at Arthur's Wine Shop, Belk, in Charlotte. 13% abv.
Salmon color with transparency. Scent of barely ripe strawberries. Flavor also reflects barely ripe strawberries and perhaps watermelon. Dry wine but still pleasantly fruity. Should not discourage people who are new to wine. I will try to get more bottles for a summer wines tasting fundraiser (June 26th.) Versatile for pairings. I can see it with Canadian bacon, ham, salmon, pulled pork, mac and cheese, or tortellini alla panna. Would be nice on a picnic or on the patio somewhat chilled.
