OKay you masters of the zin wines, any personal ideas about these wines?? (ie - didn't like it, so buy it and give it to that neighbor you hate....or I liked it,drink it with you dinner tonight.)
1) Seghesio '96 Sonoma Zinfadel Sonoma County(not old vines.....too bad for me)
2)Preston Vineyards '95 Dry Creek Valley (Old Vines Old Clones) Zinfandel.

Thanks
Nancy

Nancy -

Let me start by offering up the following disclaimer: I am not a "zin master." <g> I'd prefer to consider myself and "zin enthusiast." ;-)

Anyway, both of these wines are good wines although I like the Preston better myself. The Seghesio is good but don't forget, many of the '96 zins are lighter and more variable in quality. And I think you'll find that with this particular wine, it's a bit lighter than in vintages like '95 or '97.

Preston is always a good producer and they have a prime piece of realestate being in Dry Creek. I can't think of anything they make I don't like.

For my money, buy the Preston, wait for the '97 Seghesios to be released!

Thanks!! I found the Preston on the sale rack at my shop for $10.(about half of retail here) Doug ( the manager) keeps telling me that things are often on there just because people don't like the name or the look of the labels....maybe he is right?! Glad I remembered right and grabbed one!

Thanks Zin Guy!
Nancy

Nancy, I put Preston in the category with some other "value priced" wineries like Fetzer, Louis Martini (yes, those folks), Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle and the like. You'll rarely (at least with their regular wines) see God, but you won't be disappointed, either. You will get a soundly -made wine (maybe you won't like the oak regimen or something, but that's a stylistic thing) that is worth the money you paid, sometimes more. Preston's zin for $10 in Minnesota strikes me as a pretty good buy, and I suspect you'll like the wine.

The '97 Seghesio is a stunner for the money. Here in Oregon it's $12-14, but it SoCal it's around $10. In these times, it's a great buy at anything under $15 in my book. I'm sure it will get to you there in Scandinavia shortly.

Good hunting.

Thanks Woodman!! Well, for $10 I am happy with a wine that won't disappoint me. And it was a good deal for the Preston, another reason why I doubt it will displease me. (not out much) As for the Seghesio '97, it may be here by now, I haven't looked for a while. Had my limit of zin, but now its getting to be time to shop again! Yahoo!! (like to shop for it almost as much as drink it.... )

Thanks

Nancy

Yikes!

Woodman, I'm in complete agreement about the "see God" thing with the zin, but I don't think the wine is down there with Fetzer and the likes. It's better than the fighting varietals no matter how you slice it. And the price is better.

As for Preston's other wines, have you had the Syrah? That wine, is one that will absolutely please. It's not possible that that wine is in the "fighting varietal" category. Maybe it's not Penfolds Grange, but it's also a $15 to $20 bottle of wine.

Glad to hear the '97 Seghesio is a success though. It would be hard to imagine that wine NOT being a success. :-)
