A Winemaker's Collection Zin from BV.
Dark ruby purple with brightening at the rim. Decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Nose of zinberry, strawberry, cinnamon, and vanilla. Flavors of under ripe blackberry, strawberry nuances and vanilla. Starts good but tastes diluted and finishes with heat and a tannic bite. Not a good wine for $24. 13.5% Alc/vol.

98 Zins, as a whole, suck. There are those that managed to produce decent stuff, but overall, thumbs down. Grab up the 97s left sitting around.

I just realized that this is not a zin. The 1998 Beauzeax is actually 42% Zinfandel, 21% Valdiguié (the grape formerly known as "Napa Gamay"), 11% Charbono, 11% Petite Sirah, 8% Primitivo and 7% Grenache. Even adding the Primitivo to the Zin, it's 50% Zin -- nowhere near the varietal percentage required to be called a Zinfandel. My wife always tells me to "read the directions", I guess this pertains to bottle labels also.
