1999 Montevina, California, Zinfandel ($10?). We spilt a bottle at our friend's last night. She had prepared a very nice rib roast of beef for the three of us, and was not up to drinking any wine. She had previously told us that this wine was a gift, that she hated Zin, and that we should bring it home with us. Well, since she didn't want any wine the beef, we volunteed to drink the Zin with it. The beef was fantastic. The wine was OK. The best we can say is that it had enough pizzaz to cope with the 15% alcohol, without our noticing it.

2001 Montevina, Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel ($9.99 NH Liquor Store). This one now carries a tighter appellation, and weighs in at 14.1% alcohol. This toned down version is a great improvement. Nice and jammy with a ton of both red and black fruit, a complex middle and a cool (i.e. not hot) finish. Matched with country ribs in James Beard's BBQ sauce for spareribs, corn on the cob, and salad with chopped up Italian style tomatoes marinated in EVOO and Pensey's Italian Seasoning. Happy Labor Day to all.
